ORIGIN & HISTORY OF KHICHADI

In the 14th century, a Persian traveler named Ibn Battuta wrote about his experiences in India and mentioned eating khichadi during his travels. He described the dish as “a mixture of rice and mung beans cooked together with butter and spices.”

During the Mughal period (16th-19th century), khichadi became even more popular and was considered a delicacy. It was often made with expensive ingredients like saffron, cardamom, and ghee, and was served with meat dishes and other rich foods.

In the 19th century, British colonizers in India began to criticize khichadi as a bland and unappetizing dish. They saw it as a symbol of India’s poverty and lack of culinary sophistication. As a result, many Indians began to turn away from khichadi and started to adopt more Westernized diets.

However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in khichadi as a healthy and nourishing meal. It is often recommended by Ayurvedic practitioners as a gentle and cleansing food for people with digestive issues. In fact, in 2017, the Indian government declared khichadi the national dish of India, recognizing its cultural and nutritional significance.

Today, there are many different variations of khichadi, each with its own unique flavor and nutritional profile. Some popular variations include moong dal khichadi, sabudana khichadi, and bajra khichadi.
